Pathfinder Foundation (PF) and The Chennai Centre for China Studies (C3S) - “India-Sri Lanka Relations: Prospects and Challenges for Improving Connectivity and Tourism” - January 2024

Pathfinder Foundation (PF) and The Chennai Centre for China Studies (C3S) recently convened a significant dialogue titled “India - Sri Lanka Relations: Prospects and Challenges for Improving Connectivity and Tourism” in Chennai, India. Attended by policymakers, academia, think tanks, tour operators, and media representatives from Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka, the roundtable aimed to bolster bilateral relations, particularly in connectivity and tourism.

Bernard Goonetilleke, Chairman, and Dr. Dayaratna Silva, Executive Director, along with other Pathfinder representatives, participated in the one-day event. Commodore Seshadri Vasan, Director General of C3S, emphasized the importance of the inaugural interaction between the two institutions in strengthening bilateral ties.

Mr. Goonetilleke, in his remarks, underscored the need for bold decisions and fresh perspectives in navigating the evolving landscape of India-Sri Lanka relations. Dr. Silva elucidated the objectives of the Dialogue, referencing PF's report on Indo-Japanese collaboration and highlighting the significance of connectivity and tourism.

The event featured sessions on Connectivity and Tourism, reflecting on the Pathfinder report's recommendations. Discussions emphasized the pivotal role of enhanced connectivity in fostering bilateral relations and facilitating tourism, trade, and cultural exchanges.

Mr. S. Kalaiselvam presented insights on promoting tourism between Southern Indian states and Sri Lanka, emphasizing the potential of historical and cultural trails to attract tourists. Sri Lankan tourism industry leaders, participating virtually, shared perspectives on enhancing tourism ties between the two countries, exploring opportunities, and addressing challenges.

The Dialogue served as a platform for constructive discussions and collaborative efforts to strengthen India-Sri Lanka relations, particularly in the connectivity and tourism sectors.
